Sonoran Desert: A Natural Open Air Museum

Wednesdays 7am-9am

Meeting Location: Le Buzz Coffee Shop: 9121 E. Tanque Verde, Tucson, AZ 85749

Tour Description:
Botany and geology-themed educational outings focusing on the enduring wonders of the Sonoran Desert, which runs from Northern Mexico to Southern Arizona, and features a rich and diverse ecosystem not found anywhere else on the planet.

Guides will explain the mysteries of the Sonora’s iconic flora, like a 40-foot Saguaro that can hold enough water to last it a year -- a late bloomer that’s likely three times as old as the average person on the hike but didn’t sprout an arm until it’s 75.

They’ll point out rocks that look like modern art tableaus with their dramatic silver, black and white striations, metamorphic rock formed 30 million years ago when tectonic activity pushed the mountains up from the ground and under great heat and pressure transformed from granite to gneiss, pulling the rock like salt-water taffy and leaving as proof mystical patterns and stripes.
